Plenary Public Address for the International Society for the History, Philosophy and Social Studies of Biology Conference - Oslo, Norway.

This talk will explore interconnections between science and ethics in environmental management. Drawing on her work in the environmental assessment and regulation of controversial technologies (such as biotechnology) and practices (such as whaling and sealing), Fern will discuss how knowledge and values intertwine when biology meets policy. The talk will particularly emphasise the importance of understanding the overlapping nature of these domains if we are to develop scientifically sound and socially robust environmental decision-making
